I took the photos below with my phone from the balcony of my apartment in Bauru, Brazil in February and March, 2020. I’ve heard plenty of teachers urging students to resist the urge to photograph sunsets. “It’s a huge photographic cliché,” they say. And while it’s not a bad idea to observe and creatively use the unique intensity and color of light at dawn, dusk, and twilight — not the sunrise or sunset itself — for best impact in one’s creative work, I’m still a sucker for a beautiful sunset. I guess that’s because I’m a human being with eyes. I’m grateful to see the beauty of the world and to feel the joy of being alive. Since we’ve all been locked-down recently, staying home to slow the pandemic, I’ve been photographing the play of light through our windows and posting those to Instagram. I’d love to see your photos of sunrise and sunset, and any other time when the light itself was your subject. Email me your pics or follow me on Instagram so that I can see what you’re posting there. Have fun!
