REFLECTING on the LEGACY of DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
It's been almost two years since the protests following the murder of George Floyd helped us to refocus our attention on becoming antiracist. If, like me, you approached yesterday as a "day on" instead of a "day off," then please know how personally committed I am to using a variety of innovative strategies in my research, creative practice, teaching, and administrative duties to support students, staff, and faculty as we work together to make a just and fair CCAD, and by extension, a better world. I am constantly learning, and un-learning. None of us will do this work perfectly, and I insist that we must call each other in and accept that people can grow and change for the better. We all have a lot to learn.

A PLAYLIST FOR YOU ALL
I made THIS SPOTIFY PLAYLIST to welcome the start of the new year, which I was fortunate to spend with my partner and other family. I hope you also had opportunities to reconnect safely with those you love. If you like the second track, the collaboration between Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Paul Simon, then consider listening to THIS CONVERSATION between Paul Simon and Malcolm Gladwell that was published on IBRAM X KENDI's PODCAST about a month ago.
REFILLING THE CREATIVE WELL
Winter Break was a wonderful time to rest, regroup, catch up on other work, and reconnect with what inspires. For me, that meant reading as much as I could, especially creative writing, poetry, and novels. I saw some movies, too, including Don't Look Up and Cloud Atlas. Listed below are some of the things I read over break, and from which I gathered new ideas to bring into my art, teaching, scholarship, and other creative practices. I'd love to learn what you're reading. Please let me know.
The Parable of the Sower, Octavia Butler
Turtles All the Way Down, John Green
Two Years, Eight Months, and Twenty-Eight Days, Salman Rushdie
Becoming, Michelle Obama
Calypso, David Sedaris
Call Us What We Carry, Amanda Gorman
